Summer Youth Employment Program

SYEP Summer Bridge Final Events

Dignity of Children’s Ideas Empowered by Youth – a series of four project-based learning modules – will be offered as part of New York City’s Summer Youth Employment Program. We are looking for professionals in a variety of fields to serve as speakers, panelists, and judges for young people taking these programs.

Two nonprofit partners – MMCC and Riseboro – are facilitating the programs, which are taking place entirely online. Together, the organizations have enrolled more than 1,100 young people ages 14-21 to take one of four modules of their choice – Climate Change and Sustainability, Entrepreneurship, Financial Wellness, and Health and Wellness.

The time commitment for this volunteer opportunity ranges from 2 to 5 hours, depending on how much you would like to be involved. Details about the four modules and the volunteer roles we seek to fill are as follows:

Module 1: Climate Change and Sustainability

In this module, youth will learn about climate change, pollution, the plastic trash crisis, the shortage of fresh water, and global health threats. They will explore how these threats impact their community and how their choices affect the environment. Youth will create a proposal to address climate change in their community, share it with subject matter experts, and present it to a panel of experts.

Volunteer Opportunity: We seek professionals in related fields to serve as panelists to provide constructive feedback about young people’s presentations, answer questions, and provide guidance and mentorship.

Date and Times: Tuesday, August 25, 3:00 – 4:30pm (for younger youth), 5:00 – 8:00pm (for older youth). Volunteers can participate at one or both times.

Module 2: Entrepreneurship

In this module, youth will learn about entrepreneurship, business, the economy, financial reports, and more. They will explore their leadership style and career interests. Youth will create a plan and prototype for a business that addresses a problem in their community. Teams will present their ideas to a panel of judges in a “Shark Tank” format.

Volunteer Opportunity: We seek business professionals and entrepreneurs to serve as judges, and to provide constructive feedback, guidance, and mentorship to the youth.

Date and Times: Thursday, August 27, 3:00 – 4:30pm (for younger youth), 5:00 – 8:00pm (for older youth). Volunteers can participate at one or both times.

Module 3: Financial Wellness

This module teaches young people about the value of money, how the financial system works, and how to manage money. Young people explore their personal values, career interests, and habits for success. They will create a community benefit project and document it by video.

Volunteer Opportunity: We seek professionals who will give a presentation to youth about the role that mentorship plays in ensuring career success, and how mentors made a difference in the presenter’s life and career. Presenters will follow their talk with a Q&A.

Dates and Times: Presentations will take place on the following dates:

• Thursday, August 20th, 10:30am-12pm and 2:30pm-4pm
• Monday, August 24th, 10:30am-12pm and 2:30pm-4pm
• Tuesday, August 25th, 10:30am-12pm and 2:30pm-4pm
• Wednesday, August 26th, 10:30pm-12pm and 2:30pm-4pm

Module 4: Health and Wellness

In this module, youth will explore physical, mental, and social health—personally, and within their communities. They will set and achieve personal goals and explore career interests. They will create a project that addresses a health issue in their community, document it by video, and present it to a panel of experts.

Volunteer Opportunity: We seek professionals in health- and wellness-related fields who can serve as panelists to judge participants’ projects, share about their professional journey, and provide constructive feedback, guidance, and mentorship to the youth.

Date and Times: Wednesday, August 26, 3:00 – 4:30pm (for younger youth), 5:00 – 8:00pm (for older youth). Volunteers can participate at one or both times.
